CNCC overcomes major deficit, falls short to #14 Salt Lake CC

Rangely, CO (02/11/21) – The Lady Spartans would face their toughest opponent yet in the 2021 season as they hosted #14 Salt Lake CC on Wednesday inside of Hefley Gymnasium.

First quarter action saw Salt Lake pushing tempo and scoring a flurry of points in transition, jumping to an early 21-10 lead. The second quarter would see CNCC become more aggressive in attacking the paint and generating free throw attempts, finishing shooting a collective 7/10 at the line for the quarter. Shooting struggles from the field plagued the lady Spartans however, as they would only connect on 3/11 FG's for the quarter. Salt Lake would enter into halftime with a 34-23 advantage.

The third quarter saw CNCC generate better offense, as they would shoot 8/15 from the field. The offensive assault by Salt Lake would continue, as the Lady Spartans would find themselves down as much as 21 points at the 2:27 mark, ending the quarter with a commanding 59-40.

Coach Gilbert's message in previous days had been to continually fight and not accept defeat. The 4th quarter is where CNCC would hold true to this and begin to mount its comeback. Led by stellar plays across the board from all 5 starters, CNCC would mount a furious comeback! Getting hot from the field, CNCC would 11/17 in the quarter, connecting on 4/7 3 point FG's and 6/8 at the foul line. Down 75-72 with 10 second left, a game tying 3 point attempt by Mckleigh Begaye unfortunately feel short. Forced to foul, Salt Lake would connect on free throws to secure victory with a final score of 80-72.

The loss drops CNCC to 2-3 overall, with an 0-2 standing in Scenic West play. The Lady Spartans were paced in this game by Jada Moss (19 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists), Kaley Woodruff (13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists), Courtney Freeman (11 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal), Mckleigh Begaye (12 points) and Kalee McEwan (10 points).


CNCC will be at home again this week inside Hefley Gymnasium on Saturday (02/13/2021) to face the Badgers of Snow CC. Tip off is 1pm MT.
