Black Team Wins the 2021 Bull and Dog Series

2021 Bull and Dog Champions
Every sports fan loves to see their team win and even more love to see their team win epically.  In the annual Bull and Dog series, this suspense is nothing short of each side wanting to bury the opposing team for bragging rights on the rest of the year.  Team Red seemed to have the upper hand early in game one as they won by 23-18.  Each time Team Black would try to mount a comeback, Team Red would answer and keep a tight grip on the lead.  Notable players for game one were Peyton Wilson (American Fork, Utah) for his stifling defense and consistent hitting.

Game two started where runs were coming at a premium.  Team Black-led game two 1-0 through five innings as the only run off the game came off the bat of Cassidy Watt (British Columbia) when he clubbed a solo home run over the left-field wall.  Team Red scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and then added six more runs in the next three and a half innings to bring the final score to 8-4.  With the win, Team Red held a commanding 2-0 series lead and had the majority of the confidence on the field.

A break in play for three days to allow players to rest up and work on their game in practice stretched the series to Wednesday, November 3.  The playful banter of players on each team did not fall off through the three off days and brought on more suspense to game three.  Not wanting to fall into a 3-0 series deficit, Team Black opened the scoring up in the bottom of the second inning as they scored four runs and took the early lead.  Team Red did not shy away from the scoring and plated two runs of their own in the next inning to make the score 4-2 favor Team Black.  Alan Sanchez (Isabela, Puerto Rico) sent a 2-1 fastball over the right-center fence with two runners in the top of the fifth inning, putting Team Red on top 5-4.  Team Red was able to plate three more runs as Team Black scored four, and the score was tied 8-8 after the completion of eight innings.  Game three had to be finished the next day at the start of practice due to the lack of daylight after eight innings.  Team Red came out in the top of the ninth inning, scored two runs, kept Team Black at bay, and won game three 10-8.

Facing a possible sweep from Team Red in game four, Team Black could rally and save the series and take game four by a score of 12-6 and stave off elimination.  Abraham Arroyo (Camuy, Puerto Rico) helped his team by clubbing a grand slam in the second inning to put Team Black on top for the rest of the game.  The mammoth shot by Arroyo hit the scoreboard in left field, and the bang ignited Team Black to not look back for the rest of the game.  Cade Butterfield (Riverton, Utah) tried to keep Team Red at pace with Team Black and their scoring as he hammered a ball over the right-centerfield fence late in the game to bring the final score to 12-6 for the Team Black win. Thus, the series stood heading into Saturday with Team Red leading 3-2.

Game six was the first lopsided game of the series as Team Black enforced the mercy rule on Team Red with a 13-0 victory in five innings.  Team Black was able to take advantage of defensive miscues and add big hits like the home run from Sias Lopez (Eloy, Arizona), who took a fastball over the right-field fence.  Team Black evened the series with the win and pushed the series to a winner take, game seven.

Game seven did not disappoint any viewers as the lead changed hands five times throughout the game, and neither team was able to push their lead advantage by more than two runs.  Late in the game, when the score was tied, Jack Rea (Edmonton, Canada) stepped into his left-handed batter's box, looking to get on base for Team Black or club his second home run of the series. Instead, Rea made firm contact and sent people to the edge of their seats as the ball sailed towards Highway 64.  At the last second, Team Red's right fielder, Tanner Blockovich (Salt Lake City, Utah), jumped up and snagged the ball out of the air as it was about to fly over the fence and rob Rea of a home run and the lead.  Team Black was able to break the tie in the top of the sixth inning, hold on to the 8-7 win, and complete the improbable comeback to take the series 4-3.
