The Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) baseball team saw its season come to a close over the weekend in the opening round of the Region 18 Tournament, falling to #1 seed and nationally ranked Salt Lake Community College in a best-of-three series at Cate Field in Salt Lake City.
The Spartans dropped both games by identical 10-0 scores, ending their postseason run, but not before making significant strides throughout the 2025 campaign.
"We knew it was going to be a challenge facing one of the top teams in the country on their home field," said Head Coach Lou McCollum. "But our guys came in ready to compete. I'm proud of how they battled all year. We've taken steps forward, and this experience will help us continue to grow."
Despite the final results, CNCC showed flashes of resilience, with contributions from key players across the roster. Sophomore Jake Cook recorded hits in both games, extending his season total while anchoring the defense behind the plate. Freshmen like Raul Zapata and Javier Gaeta continued to gain valuable postseason experience, while pitchers Brent Holdren and Aiden Lundquist gave the Spartans meaningful innings against a powerful SLCC lineup.
Season Highlights and Growth
The 2025 season featured plenty of bright spots. The Spartans notched signature conference wins, including a thrilling walk-off grand slam by sophomore Michael Deitz to defeat Southern Idaho on Sophomore Day, a series-opening win over Salt Lake earlier in the year, and several competitive performances that showcased the team's potential.
CNCC's roster featured a healthy mix of sophomore leadership and exciting freshman talent, laying the foundation for continued improvement. With a strong core returning and momentum from a Region 18 Tournament appearance, the program is positioned to keep building.
Looking Ahead
As the Spartans shift their focus to offseason development and recruiting, the tone remains optimistic. Several sophomores are expected to move on to four-year programs, while incoming recruits will join a group of returners eager to make another postseason run.
"This group gave us everything they had," McCollum said. "We're proud of the progress, and we're excited about what's next."
The CNCC baseball program thanks its sophomores for their commitment and contributions and looks forward to a promising future at Columbine Park.
