The CNCC Spartan baseball program completed its traveling portion of its 2021 fall season with a trip to Golden on Saturday to play the Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian University on Sunday. During the first game with the Orediggers, the Spartans jumped out on top early with a 3-0 lead in the first inning with runs scored by
Peyton Wilson (American Fork, Utah),
Berk Barnes (Alpine, Utah), and
Cade Butterfield (Riverton, Utah). In the second inning, Butterfield added three RBI's when he took a fastball from the Oredigger pitcher and sent it over the left-center fence for a three-run home run. The home run put the Spartans up 6-2 through four innings, as they held on for a 7-6 victory.
Rodrigo Sanchez (McAllen, Texas) toed the rubber for the Spartans and gave a great outing. Sanchez only allowed two runs on two hits in two innings of work and did a great job keeping the Oredigger batters off balance. Parker DeYoung (Draper, Utah) contributed generously to offense and defense as he batted one run in. On defense, he added two defensive assists when he threw one Oredigger runner out at the plate and another later in the inning at second base.
On Sunday, the Spartans took on a very seasoned Colorado Christian University team, and the Spartans could not get the offense going as they had the day before. However,
Berk Barnes continued to stay hot as he collected five hits and one hit-by-pitch over 15 innings. In addition,
Cade Butterfield continued to slug runs home as he plated three of the eight runs for the Spartans.
Dillon Flaagan (Eagle, Colorado) was able to capitalize in three at-bats with two hits and
Austin Armstrong (Colorado Springs, Colorado) with the same stat line.
The Spartans will conclude their fall baseball season in the next two weeks. On Saturday, October 30, the Spartans will host the Eagles of Utah State-Eastern, with the first pitch being thrown at 11 am. The week following the double-header with USU-Eastern, the Spartans will conclude their fall season with the annual Bull & Dog games.
