The Spartans baseball team traveled down to Adams State University to take on the Grizzlies after having a weekend off due to a cancelation from Otero Junior College the weekend before. The Spartans fell behind 1-0 early in their first game and were able to battle back from a 4-0 deficit to bring the game to 4-3. However, the Grizzlies tacked on four more runs to the Spartans three and won game one 8-6.
Luis Perez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) and
Santiago Guerrero (Las Cruces, New Mexico) led the Spartans on the mound with two great outings. Both Perez and Guerrero faced traffic on the bases and were able to minimize the Grizzlies runs scored.
Cameron Ostmark (West Jordan, Utah) and Guerrero led the Spartan's offense. Ostmark went 2-3 on the game with one RBI. Guerrero complimented his great pitching outing with a solid day at the plate by plating two RBI's in game one while scoring two runs for the Spartans.
Peyton Wilson (American Fork, Utah) aided the Spartan's offense with an RBI and two hits from his leadoff spot in the line-up.
During game two, the Spartans capitalized on walks and errors from the Grizzlies with timely hits. Guerrero continued to reach base with two hits and a walk, followed by
Dillon Flaagan (Eagle, Colorado),
Berk Barnes (Alpine, Utah),
Alan Sanchez (Isabela, Puerto Rico),
Rayden Deets (Roosevelt, Utah), and Nick Beltran (Fort Morgan, Colorado). They all joined the hit parade in game two as the Spartans slowly pulled away from the Grizzlies. As a result, the Spartans plated nine runs to the Grizzlies six and came out with a weekend split. Assistant coach Mike Gonzalez was pleased in game two with how the players who have not seen as much playing time yet "step in and enjoy success at this level." The Spartans will continue with this success from all players as they continue their fall baseball schedule.
The Spartans will travel to Price, Utah, on Saturday, October 16, to take on Utah State University - Eastern, with game one, starting at 11 am.
