The Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) women's soccer team delivered a monumental performance, defeating the #6 ranked team in the nation, Salt Lake Community College, 1-0 in a thrilling match on Saturday. The Spartans, playing on their home turf at Bud Striegel Family Soccer Field, were bolstered by an outstanding effort from goalkeeper Jasmine Hernandez, who secured the shutout with 13 crucial saves.
CNCC wasted no time making their mark, with the lone goal of the match coming in the 16th minute. Amelia Warner found the back of the net off an assist from Lilly Wittwer, giving the Spartans an early lead that they would not relinquish.
From that point forward, it was the Jasmine Hernandez show. The freshman goalkeeper put on a masterclass in goal, denying Salt Lake's relentless attack. Hernandez faced four shots on goal in the first half but remained rock solid, keeping the visiting team off the scoreboard.
The second half saw an even greater challenge, with Salt Lake Community College turning up the pressure and firing nine shots on goal. However, Hernandez rose to the occasion, making nine saves, including a pivotal stop on a penalty kick in the 71st minute that could have tied the game. Her quick reflexes and commanding presence in goal were key to preserving the Spartan lead and ultimately securing the shutout.
The defensive unit, led by Madison Remley, Kayla McBride, and Andelyn Jensen, also played a vital role, consistently clearing dangerous opportunities and limiting Salt Lake's scoring chances.
CNCC recorded six total shots on goal during the match, and while Salt Lake Community College dominated the possession and shot count, with 17 total shots and 13 on goal, the Spartans' defense held firm throughout the contest.
Coach Eldon Brough praised the team's effort and resilience, stating, "This was a true team victory. Jasmine was incredible in goal, and our defense did everything they needed to keep Salt Lake out of the net. Beating a top-ranked team like Salt Lake is a huge accomplishment for our program, and we're excited to build on this momentum for the rest of the season."
With this victory, the Spartans not only secured a win against one of the top teams in the nation but also showed their potential to compete at the highest level in the conference. The CNCC women's soccer team will look to continue their strong start as the season progresses.
Go Spartans!
