RANGELY, Colo. — In front of an energized Hefley Arena crowd, the Colorado Northwestern men's basketball team delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Wednesday night, pushing No. 6-ranked College of Southern Idaho to the brink before falling in a thrilling 78-76 contest.
From the opening tip, the Spartans showed they were ready to compete with one of the nation's elite teams. CNCC shot an impressive 49.1% from the field and 48.0% from three-point range executing offensively and matching CSI shot-for-shot for much of the night.
The Spartans led 40-36 at halftime after a strong first-half effort that saw them knock down six three-pointers and control the tempo. The second half featured nine lead changes and four ties, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
Jordan Jones turned in a stellar performance with 22 points, six assists, and four three-pointers, attacking the paint and creating opportunities throughout the game.
Brandon Avance added 12 points, while
Finn Powelson contributed 12 points and four rebounds.
Jaden Fitzhugh chipped in 10 points in a balanced offensive effort that saw all eight available Spartans score.
CNCC forced 16 turnovers and turned them into 22 points, showcasing the defensive intensity and toughness that kept them in control for long stretches.
With just seconds remaining, the Spartans had an opportunity to pull off the upset, but CSI converted key free throws in the closing moments to secure the narrow victory.
Despite the result, the performance spoke volumes. Competing possession-by-possession with the No. 6 team in the country demonstrated the growth, resilience, and belief within this Spartan squad. The energy in Hefley Arena was electric throughout the night, and the Spartans gave their home crowd plenty to cheer about.
CNCC will look to build on this momentum as they return to Hefley Arena on Saturday, February 14, to take on North Idaho College. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m., and the game will also serve as Sophomore Day.
If Thursday night proved anything, it's that the Spartans are capable of going toe-to-toe with anyone in the country.
Sparta — let's pack Hefley again on Saturday.
Go Spartans!
