RANGELY, Colo. — The Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) Women's Soccer team pulled off a thrilling upset on Saturday afternoon, defeating the No. 4 ranked Salt Lake Community College Bruins 1–0 at the Bud Striegel Family Soccer Field. The victory marked Salt Lake's first loss of the season and one of the most memorable moments in CNCC soccer history.
After a scoreless first half, the Spartans broke through in the 55th minute when Lilly Wittwer calmly buried a penalty kick to give CNCC the lead. The goal proved to be the difference as the Spartans' defense held strong against relentless pressure from the Bruins.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jasmine Hernandez was outstanding in net, recording five saves to secure the clean sheet. CNCC's back line, anchored by Macie Hoskins, Taygen Overall, and Andelyn Jensen, stayed organized and composed, frustrating one of the most potent offenses in the nation.
"This was an incredible team effort," said Head Coach Eldon Brough. "We played with composure, discipline, and belief. I'm so proud of how our women battled from start to finish. This is a special group that continues to grow every week."
The Spartans' attacking unit—led by Amelia Warner, Ashlee Harris, and Chloe Vowell—kept the Bruins' defense on alert all afternoon, combining for nine total shots and several dangerous counterattacks.
With the win, CNCC improves to 6-5 overall (4-4 SWAC), while Salt Lake falls to 8-1-2 (6-1-1 SWAC).
The Spartans will look to keep their momentum rolling at home next week as they prepare to face Snow College and Utah State University Eastern in another critical stretch of Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
Go Spartans!
