The #19 ranked Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) women's soccer team fought to a hard-earned 1-1 draw against College of Southern Idaho (CSI) on Thursday. With this result, the Spartans improved to 6-1-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) play.
The game was a defensive battle from the start, with both teams creating chances but struggling to find the back of the net early. CSI struck first in the 31st minute, as Kenna Fransen scored an unassisted goal to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0.
The Spartans responded with a relentless attack, earning 10 corner kicks throughout the match. CNCC finally found the equalizer in the 74th minute when Lilly Wittwer scored an unassisted goal, tying the game at 1-1. Wittwer's goal energized the Spartans, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to find the winning goal.
Jasmine Hernandez, CNCC's standout goalkeeper and recent NJCAA Goalkeeper of the Week honoree, was once again stellar in net. She recorded six crucial saves, keeping her team in the game and securing the draw.
The Spartans had nine total shots, with five on goal, while CSI recorded 11 shots and seven on target. Both teams played aggressive, defensive soccer, resulting in a fiercely contested match.
Head Coach Eldon Brough praised his team's resilience, saying, "This was a tough match, but I'm proud of how our team fought back after going down a goal. Lilly's equalizer was huge, and Jasmine was excellent in goal once again. We'll take the positives from this and continue to improve."
CNCC will look to build on this result as they prepare for their next match against Truckee Meadows Community College on Saturday.
Go Spartans!
